A few weeks ago I accompanied our teens for the annual youth rally sponsored by the Eugene Church of Christ. During one of the lessons the speaker for the weekend showed a short film titled “The Butterfly Circus.” The film is a metaphor for the saving transformation Jesus brings into our lives and is well worth the twenty minutes it takes to watch. I have attached a link below.
There are some things I like about the film that you should know in advance. The actor who plays the main character, Will, has severe physical disabilities. These are real, they are not computer generated images. This makes his performance even more impressive.
The film is high quality in it’s plot, character development, theme and production. Too often Christian productions are shallow, simplistic or unbelievable. Instead of advancing a good argument for Christian belief they impede it, because they are poorly done, and so are not taken seriously. This film is well thought out, rich in dialogue and imagery and thought provoking.
Last, for now at least, the film touches deeply on many important theological themes. These include: the renewed perspective that Jesus brings toward our disabilities and shortcomings, the transformation that relationship with him brings to the value and purpose of our lives, and the redeeming character of his church in which all members find joy, and significant service are also highlighted.
So, spend a few minutes watching the film and considering its message carefully and let me know what you think. See you Sunday, Hoj
